The Ole Miss Women’s Basketball team opens up its regular season at home in the Pavilion against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions on Friday.
With nine returning players, the players are excited to start the season and see how their hard work and changes in the offseason have paid off, according to Coach Matt Insell.

“Our girls have made a huge commitment in the gym because we did not shoot the ball very well last year,” Insell said. “We challenged them, and the shooting we did in the summer you see paying off. That’s something I looking forward to seeing all year.”

The team, who won 93-40 in an exhibition game against Mississippi College last week, will play not only Friday afternoon but also again on Sunday against Lipscomb.

“Both teams are a little bit different in styles, and so that could be a challenge for us,” Insell said. “They also aren’t nearly as big as us, and so from a defensive standpoint, it’s a little concerning for us for how their style of play is.”

Although their defense may be a concern early on, Coach Insell was pleased with the offensive efficiency on display in the exhibition.

“We’re probably one of the most efficient teams we’ve had since I’ve been here and one of the most efficient I’ve ever coached,” Insell said. “Every time the ball gets to the paint, something positive happens offensively.”

Coach Insell believes senior forward Shequila Joseph is the glue piece holding the team together.

“She’s not going to average the most points for our team by any means,” Insell said. “But she’s going to do the little things defensively and offensively that help us win games.”

The Rebels’ game will start in the afternoon, which is a bit unusual compared to past seasons. Overall, the team is looking forward to improving from its 10-20 record from last season.

“2:30 is a unique time to start the season, but we’re excited about that and the start of the season,” Insell said.
