The Mizzou Tigers defeated the Ole Miss Rebels in its SEC opener with a 5-0 win Friday night.
Both teams looked evenly matched on paper going into the game with the same record of 4-2, but Mizzou proved dominant with a shutout and five goals total against Ole Miss.
The Rebels defense saw a lot of action throughout the entire game with most of the play on their side of the field and no goals to show for it it.
Mizzou scored twice in the first half on a shot by Jessica Johnson right in front of Rebel goalkeeper Marnie Merritt, and a on a second successful shot from the far corner of the box by Savannah Trujillo.
After halftime, the Tigers continued to dominate with a quick goal by Sarah Luebbert followed by Amanda Shaw’s successful shot.
Mizzou continued their scoring streak with a successful penalty kick taken by Allie Hess after Merritt’s foul in the box.
Although Mizzou scored five times, goalkeeper Marnie Merritt had four crucial saves throughout the game.
Despite the goal deficit, some fresh faces got to see the field for their first time for the Rebels. Freshmen Grace Waugh and Shannon Maitland went in during the second half for their first collegiate action.
The Rebels will take on University of South Alabama for the first time in 16 years Sunday night at 6 p.m. The Jaguars lost in both SEC games they’ve played this season against Auburn and Mississippi State while Ole Miss looks to get a win in this weekend.
