After two years of having their traditional walk rained out, Oxford’s Relay for Life hosted their first annual gala at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center.

The event was coordinated and hosted by a committee of Ole Miss students, with American Cancer Society Community Manager Micah Johnson and Mid-South Division Senior Manager Kim Easterling as supporting staff.

The event featured live music and dancing, food and drinks and a silent auction.

According to event leader and political science major Sierra Francois, the event raised $8,000 from presale tickets alone. All money raised during the gala benefits the American Cancer Society and cancer research.

“It’s for a great cause,” Francois said. “I think everyone is getting into the gala season and it’s something new for Ole Miss.”
