Marshall Henderson will make his home debut tonight as Ole Miss will host the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State.
Last season against MVSU, Henderson had one of his most efficient games as he scored 22 points on just 12 shots in 23 minutes. He was 5 of 11 on threes in the game and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Ole Miss won 93-57.
MVSU has not defended the three well this season, as they have allowed the three Division I opponents they have played to shoot 42.3 percent from deep. Last season, everyone not named Marshall Henderson shot 1 of 16 from beyond the arc against MVSU.
The Delta Devils are 0-3 against NCAA Division I opponents. They do have a 108-48 victory over Champion Baptist College, which has an enrollment of 250 full-time undergraduate students. They compete in the Association of Christian College Athletics.
Against Division I competiton, MVSU has dropped three contests to Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. They have struggled to be efficient, as they have posted a .87 points per possession offensively and have allowed 1.30 points per possession on defense. They lost those three games by an average of 33.7 points.
For Ole Miss some individuals to watch:
LaDarius White has struggled through this young season. He is 1 of 12 from the field so far and has scored four points. He has more airballs – two – than made field goals. White was expected to be the secondary scorer to Henderson this season, but he has fallen way down the list of offensive weapons.
Anthony Perez finally played like he was six-foot-nine against Coastal Carolina, where had three blocks in 21 minutes. All last season, Perez had five blocks in 203 minutes. Perez got the minutes late in the game last weekend instead of White, and he missed two free throws late in the game, but got a chance at redemption and buried two free throws to seal the game with under five seconds left. He has been more aggressive this year, as he lead Ole Miss is free throw attempts per minute.
Jarvis Summers is averaging 21 points per game; he has scored in double digits in both games. Last season, Ole Miss was 13-3 when Summers reached double digits. In his career, Ole Miss is 25-10 when Summers reaches double digits.
Sebastian Saiz leads the team in rebounding percentage, as he is grabbing 14.41 percent of available rebounds and has six boards per game. Unofficially, he leads the team in setting screens. He has turned a few of his ball screens into beautiful pick-and-rolls or pick-and-pops. Ole Miss could have something special with Saiz as a roll man.
And in small sample size fun, Dwight Coleby, who has played just 10 minutes this season, has a hilarious turnover percentage of 77.32 – or a turnover every 3:20. He has yet to attempt a field goal on the season.
