Negotiations continue; no resolution reached Friday

JACKSON – Following a meeting Friday, the Institutions of Higher Learning confirmed there are discussions between Chancellor Dan Jones and the Board of Trustees on his contract. However, the negotiations are not going to be shared with the media.

“As long as discussions are continuing we are not going to communicate through the press and we are not going to talk to the press,” Commissioner of Higher Education Jim Borsig said.

“You can ask me again. I’m still going to give you the same answer. We have discussions that are ongoing and as long as those discussions are ongoing we are not going to be talking to the media.”

Dan Davis, Ole Miss alumnus and business owner who attended the meeting, said he was hoping the board would “do what married couples do” and say, “Look, honey, I made a mistake.” Davis said if one of the decisions is to make Jones apologize, it would be insulting to Jones and the people of Mississippi.

Davis said he has never seen anything like this and wants to hear answers from the IHL board. There are cries from the university and state and the board is not listening, according to Davis.

“They don’t care, and I think that’s the way it comes across,” Davis said. “Whether they mean it or not that’s exactly the message they are sending. Not only to the people sitting in that room, but to every person that watches.”
