Ole Miss won a landslide victory against Troy on Saturday, easily defeating them by a score of 51-21. The most impressive part of the victory was the tremendous offensive assault unleashed by the Rebels.
They attacked both through the air and on the ground, demolishing the Trojans’ defensive efforts en route to gaining a whopping 751 yards of offense. This historic total was the most the school has ever had, as well as the fifth most in Southeastern Conference history.
“That’s always good; it means you’re doing something right,” head coach Hugh Freeze said of the record-breaking performance. “I think we broke (the school record) in the third quarter, so it was a good day.”
Both quarterbacks did a good job of managing the Ole Miss offense, as junior Bo Wallace led the way with 272 passing yards on 17 of 26 yards passing with three touchdowns. Wallace also had 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Senior Barry Brunetti had 97 yards and a touchdown through the air on 3 of 4 passing.
“Efficient is probably the best word,” offensive coordinator Dan Werner said of Wallace’s performance. “He made some really good throws. I didn’t see any decisions that were even close to being intercepted or anything, and that’s the big thing that we’re working on. So I was happy with him.”
A balanced offensive attack meant that the Rebels had contributions from all over the field.
Sophomore running back Jaylen Walton cut through the defense to gain 143 total yards on only nine total offensive touches. Fellow running backs I’Tavius Mathers and Jeff Scott were also productive, with Mathers gaining 60 yards and a touchdown, while Scott picked up 54 yards in his first game back from injury.
“I think it was good that he got some snaps this week,” Freeze said of Scott. “Now, maybe he can knock all the rust off next week and be back to his old self.”
