Ole Miss took control early and avenged their lone Southeastern Conference loss of the season with a 82-63 win over in-state rival Mississippi State on Saturday in Oxford.
Senior guard Marshall Henderson and junior guard Jarvis Summers led the way offensively for the Rebels with 19 points each, and the rebounding efforts continued to be big as freshman big man Sebastian Saiz led with 11 rebounds and junior forward Aaron Jones added 10 rebounds.
“We are doing it by committee,” said head coach Andy Kennedy. “We need Marshall and Jarvis to be all-league caliber players for us and up to this point, they have been.”
Junior guard Martavious Newby, who is the intangible spark coach Kennedy needs, went out early in the first half with a broken hand.
“We can’t replace Newby,” Kennedy said. “I was just reminding the guys in the locker room to play every game and possession as if it were your last. Guys now have to step up to fill Newby’s absence.”
The Rebels look to continue to improve to 6-1 in the SEC Wednesday against the Volunteers. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. in Knoxville, Tenn.
