Ole Miss releases D.J. Law from NLI

After a National Signing Day that Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said went “smoothly,” the drama began late Wednesday afternoon when it was reported that Rebel signee D.J. Law had also signed a National Letter of Intent with Utah.

Law, a three-star athlete, looked to be an Ole Miss signee when the Rebels announced him as a member of the class at 8:23 a.m on Wednesday. Utah, however, announced Law as a signee at 3:36 p.m.

It would depend on which school verified the NLI first to determine which one is valid. However, Freeze released a statement Thursday, putting a rest to the drama.

“Our compliance department is cooperating fully with the NLI office on this matter,” Freeze said. “We are completely certain no wrongdoing occurred by our coaching or compliance staff. Regardless of the outcome of the findings, we want athe young man to attend the school he wants.

“After talking with D.J. and his family, we are releasing him from his NLI and wish him the best. We have put this matter behind us and plan to make best use of that scholarship.”

Ole Miss ended up using 26 scholarships of their available 28 for the the 2014 signing class. Therefore, the Rebels can choose to use the remaining two scholarships on early enrollees for the 2015 class.
