In just a few days, millions of people will hit the road for the holidays and Ole Miss students will be part of the crowd. This year will be a little cheaper due to gas prices being lower than last year’s.
According to AAA, 98.6 million Americans will be traveling this holiday season and that is an increase of forty percent more than last year. Last year there were 94.8 million holiday travelers. This is the highest increase of holiday motorists since 2009. Americans have a tendency to journey 50 miles or more from home during the holiday season.
Motorist Larry Tidwell is one of the many motorists that fill up at Murphy’s Gas Station on Jackson Ave. He frequents this gas station every two weeks because of the prices and location.
Tidwell says, “It used to take sixty dollars for my truck when it was high, now it’s around thirty dollars.
Last year’s national average was three dollars and sixteen cents and now it’s down to two dollars and twenty-six cents according to AAA. Gas prices in Oxford, Mississippi are at an all time low with one dollar and eighty-nine cents per gallon.
According to gasbuddy.com the five lowest prices in our area are conveniently located on Jackson and University Ave., which allow easy access for everyone around town.
Student Andrew Walker says, “I’m on a budget and I have two factors when it comes to deciding where I fill up—price and location.”
This holiday season, keeping costs and location in mind, there’s an app for that. AAA has updated their Apple Watch App to give consumers more control over their gas spending. AAA Mobile improves on-the-go access to help customers plan trips and to find the nearest and cheapest gas stations while traveling. This app will be handy for travelers on the go this season.
