Ole Miss continued their momentum Saturday night and won their second game in a row, this time defeating Idaho 59-14. The Rebels improved to 5-3 overall for the season, while the Vandals dropped to 1-7.
“It’s good to get a win tonight,” Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said. “The first half was a bit sloppy and undisciplined. The first six or seven minutes were really good, but the rest of the first half, we were going through the motions. I was disappointed at halftime, but I felt like we played a pretty solid second half. It was great to get everyone in and to come out injury-free.”
The Rebels jumped out to a big lead early and controlled the game the whole way through. It didn’t take long for Ole Miss to get their first score of the game. With just over 12 minutes left in the first quarter junior quarterback Bo Wallace found senior receiver Ja-Mes Logan from 37 yards out to put the Rebels up 7-0.
A few minutes later, sophomore running back Jaylen Walton scampered 40 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 14. Senior kicker Andrew Ritter would add a 50-yard field goal late in the first, and from there, the route was on.
Idaho would add a touchdown in the second quarter, but Ole Miss would answer with another Walton touchdown run, this time from one yard out, to put the score at 24-7 heading into half.
The Rebels came out of the locker room firing in the second half.
Wallace would find Logan again, for their second touchdown connection of the night. This one coming on a 65-yard pass. Then, the defense would strike with a 12-yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown by senior defensive back Dehendret Collins.
Idaho would add a touchdown after that, but the game was long over.
After establishing a big lead, Ole Miss started putting in some of their backups who ended up having big games. Sophomore running back I’Tavius Mathers scored on a 64-yard touchdown run, and freshman running back Mark Dodson also added a 30-yard touchdown reception, which pushed the Rebel lead to 52-14. Junior wide receiver Collins Moore would cap the scoring for Ole Miss with a 35-yard touchdown reception midway through the fourth quarter, and from there the Rebels would cruise to the victory.
