Grayson (Ga.) senior defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s No. 1 football recruit and the brother of Ole Miss redshirt freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche, has decomitted from Clemson, where he previously committed on June 14.
Neal McCready of RebelGrove/Rivals.com first reported the news Wednesday night and it was confirmed by Will Hammock of the Gwinnett Daily Post Thursday morning.
In the Gwinnett Daily Post article, Grayson head coach Mickey Conn said Nkemdiche notified the Clemson coaches of the decision this past Sunday.
“I think he’s still very interested in Clemson, but he’s got a brother (Denzel) who goes to Ole Miss and he’s got other schools that he likes as well,” Conn said. “He’s going to clear his mind and take some other visits.”
McCready interviewed Robert’s mother, Beverly Nkemdiche, this past Friday about his recruitment. She said, “Nothing will happen until February.”
Conn similarly expects a likely decision on National Signing Day, Feb. 6.
Two of his high school teammates, Wayne Gallman and David Kamara, remain committed to Clemson and former high school teammate, quarterback Nick Schuessler, transferred from Mississippi State to Clemson this year.
Clemson and Ole Miss, as well as Alabama, LSU, Florida and Oregon are among his favorites.
“I don’t want to go to a school that’s not doing good,” Nkemdiche said in an interview this past Thursday. “I want to go to a school that is up and coming — having a good team and where I can come fit in and help my teammates get better and win some ball games.”
