“We just need to stay vigilant and be aware of our surroundings, and be friendly to everyone you meet.” -Madison Simpson (Freshman finance major)
“I was shocked and sad for all the communities that have been affected by all the shootings going on right now. It really scares you because you feel like you can’t feel safe anymore.” -Natalie Poole (PY4 Pharmacy)
“It’s unreal how many times this has happened recently. I’m just in shock.” -Sam Stewart (PY4 Pharmacy)
“The first thing I thought when I heard about it was, ‘This is another shooting on a Mississippi campus.’ I honestly think it could happen here.” -Anthony Grishby (Freshman pharmacy major)
“When I first heard about it I got really upset because of what happened before with the Mississippi State, not because of that necessarily but because it happened so soon right after each other it made me think about what our nation really has turned to and what we can do about it to really change the nature of what’s going on because right now it just seems like we’re headed in a really bad direction in that area and I feel like there must be some different steps we can take so that we can help prevent these things from happening.”-Serenity Jones (Sophomore Psychology/Theater Minor)
“So I was in my music class and a girl said ‘Hey there’s a shooting at Delta State,’ and I was shocked because I live only 30 minutes away from there so I immediately texted one of my friends from high school because he goes there and he was like ‘Yeah the shooter is in my building, like I’m freaking out, everybody’s freaking out we don’t know what to do.’ I just told him to stay safe.” -Radhi Daya (Freshman Biology major)
“I mean I was just thinking about Ole Miss, you know, hopefully that won’t be us. And of course I know people from there so I was wondering if they were okay. It makes you think who’s next?” -Tyler Rudd (Junior psychology major)
“Honestly my first reaction since the State shooting just happened was just that it’s working its way around Ole Miss which scares me. But I do feel like we’re fairly prepared if it were to happen.” Taylor Lust (Senior Journalism major)
“Well I have a friend there so I was really worried about him, texting him to see how he was. But it just makes me sad because you hear about them all the time, like shootings, the one in Starkville and now here, it’s just really sad how the state of the world is and what makes somebody want to do that. There’s always a possibility it could happen here and I feel like we have to be prepared all the time. We have to be aware of what to do and where to go when that happens.”-Caleb Castillo (Junior English major)
“When I found out I was like ‘Wow, this is getting ridiculous,’ because it just happened on the MSU campus. And then my mom texted me about it, she always sends me alerts and stuff so when I heard about it I was like ‘It’s probably a rumor that a guy’s dead,’ and then they said that he was. I just hope it doesn’t happen here because it seems like it’s going on all around the state.” -Mallory Irby (Junior Graphic Design Marketing and Astronomy major)
“First I thought about everybody at Delta State, I know a lot of people that go there. I mainly just wanted to pray for them and get in contact with people to make sure they were okay. It’s really sad to think that this has happened twice in two weeks in Mississippi schools, because I mean with the State scare a few weeks ago and then this now, it really makes you think about how bad people can be sometimes and then of course it was really sad to hear there was an actual victim.” -Jesse Louwerens (Senior English major)
