FRIDAY: OLE MISS 3, UMBC 1

WASHINGTON – The Ole Miss volleyball team used its depth to its advantage Friday night in its season-opening 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-14) win over UMBC at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C. The Rebels’ 3-1 victory was the opening match of the GW Invitational, hosted by George Washington University.

“It’s a big win for us just to get a win coming out of the shoot, and to get some of those first game jitters out of the way,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin said. “The team did an excellent job of responding after being really nervous in that first game.”

SATURDAY: WASHINGTON 3, OLE MISS 2

WASHINGTON – Ole Miss (1-1) got off to a great start Saturday afternoon against Maryland (2-0) at the GW Invitational in Washington, D.C., but could not close out the Terrapins late and lost a heartbreaker 3-2 (25-13, 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 11-15) at the Charles E. Smith Center.

“We learned a little bit about ourselves and did some good things along the way,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin said. “In the fourth set we didn’t hold on to the lead, and in the fifth set we had the lead at 9-7 but didn’t execute down the stretch. That is something we definitely have to address.”

SATURDAY: OLE MISS 3, GEORGE WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON – The Ole Miss volleyball team faced set point in the fourth set Saturday night at George Washington after once holding a late lead. The young Rebels (2-1) never wavered however, and rallied to score three straight points to cap off a 3-1 (25-19, 26-28, 25-20, 26-24) victory over the Colonials (1-2) at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C.

“It’s always tough to win on the road, especially against a scrappy George Washington team,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin said. “I’m really proud of the way the team played with the energy that they did throughout the match.”

Ole Miss opens its home slate Sept. 6 against Kennesaw State (11:00 a.m. CT) and Georgia Southern (7:30 p.m. CT) as part of the Magnolia Invitational. The Rebels have won the tournament for each of the last six years. Ole Miss will close out the Magnolia Invitational on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT against Arkansas State.
