Ole Miss Campus Recreation hosted a free “Ride n’ Rave” cycling class in the Turner Center cycling studio as part of their Wildcard Wednesday Program.
Natalie Younger, a junior nutrition and dietetics major, taught the “Real Ryder” cycling class.
The fitness department hosts a group fitness class one Wednesday out of every month with a fun theme to help promote their department. The classes are open to all students, faculty, and community members and a FitSticker is not required.
“It’s just a fun event and anyone can come,” said Younger. “There’s glow sticks, black lights, rave music and it’s just a fun time to come out and get a good work out.”
Nora Fotland, an international student from Norway studying mechanical engineering, considers herself a regular group fitness participant and was very excited for this event.
“This is my first time to a rave cycling class so that’s cool,” Fotland said. “I am very curious to hear what music they are going to play.”
Meg Edwards, a Fitness Graduate Assistant for Ole Miss Campus Recreation, hosted the event along with her undergraduate group fitness staff. Glow sticks were sold for the Pro-Rec Organization.
“Pro-Rec is a student-run group and basically the goal is to raise money for student development opportunities,” Edwards said.
The funds are available for any student working in the campus recreation department.
“For instance, a group fitness instructor who wants to obtain another certification that costs several hundred dollars could go to Pro-Rec, write a letter of intent of how they are going to use that certification to develop themselves and then contribute to the department and could hopefully get part of that funded,” Edwards said.
“We are also doing a raffle right now in the fitness center to just raise money for Pro-Rec,” she said. “50 dollars here and 50 dollars there that’s still helping some kids.”
Campus Recreation will host one more Wildcard Wednesday event next month. The December Wildcard Wednesday is called “HIIT (high intensity interval training) Me With Your Best Shot.”
