Ole Miss is likely to land Gian Clavell, a 6-foot-3 guard from Northwest Kansas Technical College, according to multiple media outlets, including RebelGrove.com and OMSpirit.com.

As a freshman, Clavell, a class of 2014 recruit, averaged 19.4 points per game, while shooting 39 percent on 3-pointers, causing Ole Miss fans to ask if he is the next Marshall Henderson.

In his lone season at the junior college level, Henderson averaged barely more points than Clavell with 19.6 points per game. Henderson also shot 41 percent from three, just better than Clavell. Also Clavell’s field goal percentage was 45 percent, while Henderson was at 44 percent. Finally, Henderson shot 14.7 field goals per game and Clavell fired up 13.3.

The statistical comparison of Clavell to Henderson at the junior college level seems pretty even. But consider that when Henderson was at South Plains College, his team averaged 65 possessions per game, while Clavell’s Northwest Kansas Technical College averaged 79 possessions per game.

Essentially, Henderson was launching more shots with fewer opportunities than Clavell. Henderson accounted for 27 percent of his team’s field goal attempts, while Clavell shot 20 percent of his team’s attempts.

Also, Clavell didn’t rely on the three nearly as much as Henderson did. Henderson hoisted up 9.5 3-pointers per game in junior college, while Clavell shot 6.8 per game from beyond the arc. Sixty-four percent of Henderson’s field goal attempts were threes, while 51 percent of Clavell’s shots were from deep.

Statistically, Clavell is close but ultimately falls short of the green light Henderson had. Clavell didn’t dominate his team’s shots nearly as much as Henderson and Clavell didn’t need the three nearly as much to get his points.
