Oxford Burger Company is introducing a new style of dining to the Oxford Square. The fast and casual restaurant brings a simple but well-done menu with the aim of providing all of Oxford with a great meal for a good price.
Co-owners and Ole Miss alumni Chris Stephenson and Patrick McNulty said they have always wanted to bring a great hamburger place to Oxford and saw an opportunity when the former Oxford Eagle newspaper office became available. Stephenson said quality is at the core of OBC.
“We use a higher cut of beef, 100 percent Black Angus beef that’s never frozen. We hand-patty it every day or before each shift,” he said.
While there are classic burgers as well as an option to build your own hamburger, OBC has several unexpected burgers on its menu. Homemade macaroni and cheese is made daily for its “Mac Attack” burger. Its best-seller, a last-minute addition, is “Col Reb’s Ghost” which features pepper jack cheese, bacon and house-made “come back” sauce.
If you’re feeling especially adventurous, try out the Peanut Better hamburger. Don’t expect the basic PB&J — this burger features a house-made peanut butter maple reduction and bacon. Stephenson said it’s an “unusual taste and not something I get every time I order a burger, but it’s good. There’s something about the warm peanut butter and bacon on the burger.”
He heard about a similar burger while listening to a radio show, and after some tweaking, the new classic made it on the menu.
Stephenson said OBC built some of its burgers to bring “different flavor profiles” the customer might not have experienced before. Of course, you’ll find the classic cheeseburgers and hamburgers, but there are also several options for customers to branch out. OBC also offers several free add-ons, like caramelized onions, jalapenos and barbecue sauce as well as the classics. Customers can also add bacon, a fried egg and mac and cheese to their burgers.
It also has a kids menu and several chicken sandwiches, and for the vegetarian Rebs, there’s a portobello mushroom burger.
“I do feel a special bond (with Oxford) because I went to school here and I stayed after I graduated,” Stephenson said. “There’s Oxford, and then there’s the university, and we definitely want to be a part of both communities.”
With milkshakes, beer and desserts, Oxford Burger Company brings quality and ease to an American restaurant classic.
For all of the really great food on the Square, a lot can be said for a quick, simple and well-made burger you don’t have to wait an hour to order.
