Valentine’s Day date ideas

Feb.14 — a day you either love to love or love to hate.
It only comes once a year, but the day can make you want to tell all your Instagram followers how much you love your significant other— or make you want to cringe and stay in bed all day. Whether you have a date with that special someone, are doing something fun with friends or hanging out by yourself, we have the perfect ideas if you haven’t yet tackled your Valentine’s Day plan.

1. Indulge in something for yourself
Whether that be shopping for a new outfit or just doing something that you want to do for once, make today all about you. Why spend money on a significant other when you can Treat. Yo. Self?

2. Hit the gym
Some people work out to be healthy. Others work out because they enjoy it. Working out releases endorphins, which give you the same feeling that you would get if you were in love. Endorphins make you happy. If you wish you could feel like all the other lovebirds today, a run in Lamar Park or lifting weights at the Turner Center can give you the same effect.

3. Get outside
For those of you who would rather spend time outside than in, get some fresh air with (or without!) your date. Whether it’s taking the pup for walk on Whirlpool Trails, shooting at Sardis or hiking Thacker Mountain, there are so many possibilities around Oxford. It’ll clear your head, and the outdoors will get your hearts pounding.

4. Make breakfast for dinner
Fancy dinners aren’t your style? Prefer french toast over French cuisine? Switch up your meals and make your favorite breakfast foods for dinner instead. Include different syrups and spreads, such as Nutella, chocolate sauce and toppings to give your meal a unique twist. Dress in pajamas and lounge around to get the full morning effect. What could be better than pancakes and the smell of sizzling bacon? Nothing.

5. Have a movie (or video game) marathon
Ladies: grab your other dateless friends, stock up on all your favorite chocolatey snacks, and binge-watch all the romantic movies a guy would never want to watch with you. There’s no pressure to get dressed to impress, so yoga pants and other comfy clothes will definitely be appropriate attire.

Guys: Gather up all of your single bros, order too many boxes of pizza and wings and play your favorite video games all night without judgment. Again, you’re without the pressure of putting on a button-down and a bowtie. Plus, you won’t have to worry if she’s having a good time or not. Not interested in video games? The NBA All-Star Game comes on at 7 p.m.

6. Host a potluck dinner
Gather all your friends and have them make their favorite dish. Bonus points if it’s Valentine’s Day themed. Have some guests bring main courses, and others bring appetizers or desserts. Use Valentine’s Day plates and napkins if you’re feeling extra festive. Who needs a boyfriend or girlfriend to love when you can have the love of your friends?

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a dreaded holiday! Show yourself, your date or your friends love and you’ll be sure to have a day to remember.
