Last week we pointed fingers and honked horns at careless, unpredictable pedestrians at cross walks, but as there are two sides to every story, I'm ranting about the other side of the pavement battlefield today.
So, you know what really grinds my gears? People who do not know how to drive.
How many times have we come across people who seem completely clueless behind the wheel? We like to yell at them (who, by the way, can't hear you), but deep down we know we all slip up. What driver slip ups tick you off the most? Allow me to take some time and tell of some stupid moments I've witnessed.
Four-Way Stops
Just so it's clear, you are supposed to stop when you approach a stop sign, not slow down to a roll. You can be ticketed for that. The Mississippi Driver’s manual says, the first person to stop has the right of way. If two vehicles stop at the same time, the person that does not disturb the flow of traffic by turning left goes first. Is that really so confusing?
Speed Limits
The speed limit seems to be a strange, unknown set of numbered signs dotted along roads everywhere. According to the United States Department of Transportation, 42 percent of fatalities on roads are caused by speeding. In fact, teenagers and young adults are responsible for 62 percent of speeding incidents. Surprise, surprise. Oxford happens to be full of us. For you speed demons out there, this simply means, for goodness sake, slow down!
Cross-Walks
By law, cars have to stop for pedestrians. Pedestrians rule the roads. This includes cross walks everywhere, not just on campus. So when you see someone by a cross walk, slow down. But if they try to cross without a cross walk, make a citizen’s arrest on the grounds of J-walking. And if you do, please let me be there, I will bring some popcorn.
