The Ole Miss American Marketing Association will host The Advertising Club of New York’s 2013 Advertising Person of the Year, Steve Pacheco, for its first forum of the year today at 1 p.m in the Overby Center.

Pacheco serves as the director of advertising for FedEx and will discuss how FedEx uses pop culture in its marketing techniques. His work has received national and international awards and recognition.

“Our mission is to help students connect with the marketing world, get involved and get experience,” said Shea Gabrielleschi, director of programming for the association. “We want to make people aware of Ole Miss and AMA. An opportunity like this, to have someone like Steve to come and speak, is rare.  We are hoping to have an impact on the Ole Miss marketing community.”

Pacheco, a Memphis native and graduate of the University of Memphis, began his career at FedEx in 1997 after serving as the advertising director for International Paper, a $25 billion paper company. Pacheco has produced more than a dozen Super Bowl spots at FedEx, and he oversaw International Paper’s involvement in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.

The university’s marketing association aims to raise awareness and recognition for Ole Miss’ marketing community through forums like this one. The organization encourages all students and Oxford residents to attend.

Senior journalism major Matthew Pike expressed excitement in anticipation of the event.

“I think it’s great whenever they get people to come,” Pike said. “I think it’s really important that they get executives that are legit and know a lot about marketing.”

The forum is open to the public, and a Q-and-A segment will follow the event.

“I am very proud of the work (marketing association members) have done,” said Scott Fiene, the organization’s faculty adviser.

The Ole Miss American Marketing Association is a student-run organization established by two integrated marketing communications graduate students in 2012. For more information about Steve Pacheco and the marketing association, visit olemissama.com.
