The members of Who’s Who Among University and Colleges 2017 class were honored Friday afternoon at the Gertrude C. Ford Center. Ten of the 150 recipients were inducted into the Student Hall of Fame.
Noel Wilkin, interim provost and executive vice chancellor, said the university’s success relies on its students’ achievements.
“Today we celebrate that success as we recognize some of our best and brightest students,” Wilkin said.
Induction into the Student Hall of Fame has been established as the highest honor a student can receive at the university. A selection committee chooses the recipients through a process outlined in the Associated Student Body Constitution, according to Brandi Hephner Labanc, vice chancellor for student affairs.
John Brahan, Austin Dean, Leah Gibson, James-Roland Markos, Alex Martin, Chase Moore, Austin Powell, Miller Richmond, Acacia Santos and Yujing Zhang are the 2017 Hall of Fame inductees.
Fame recipients have served in various organizations across campus, and were selected for their outstanding leadership, academic achievement and community service.
Brahan is a public policy leadership major from Hattiesburg. He is the former ASB vice president and has served as the vice president of standards for the interfraternity council.
Dean is an integrated marketing communications major from Hammond, Illinois. He has served as the vice chairman of the university judicial council and is a founding member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity on campus.
Gibson is a journalism major from Starkville. She serves as the Rebel Radio station manager and is the reigning Miss University of the University of Mississippi.
Markos is a biochemistry, public policy leadership and biological sciences major from Jackson, Tennessee. He has served as the president of Sigma Nu, president of the Interfraternity Council and editor-in-chief of the UM Undergraduate Research Journal.
Martin is an international studies major from Madison. She has served as the ASB student director of academic affairs and on the vice chancellor’s student advisory council.
Moore is a business management major from Horn Lake. He has served as the vice president of the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society and is the founder and president of Student Affairs Leaders of Tomorrow.
Powell is a public policy leadership and philosophy major from Corinth. He served as the Ole Miss Big Event assistant director and most recently as the former Associated Student Body president.
Richmond is an international studies major from Madison. He is the president of the Lambda Sigma honor society and has served as the co-director of the ASB Cross-Cultural Engagement Committee.
Santos is a mechanical engineering major from Southaven. She is the recipient of the Roy Lee “Chucky” Mullins scholarship and is the current Miss Ole Miss.
Zhang is a pharmaceutical sciences major from Oxford. She was the head librarian and organizer for the UM human library and vice president of the school of pharmacy early entry class.
“Not only are those students who recognized here today have real life significant academic and personal achievements already, they’ve also helped make our university a better place,” Wilkin said. “And I first of all say thank you for that and how you’ve contributed to our university over time. I am proud we are honoring you today.”
