From the sports desk: College football pick’em week two

No. 13 Louisville at Syracuse

Sports editor Brian Scott Rippee: Interesting Friday night ACC match up here. I could see Syracuse hanging around for a half or so, but Louisville pulls away late.

Assistant sports editor Cody Thomason: Louisville had a great first week against Charlotte, putting up 70 points. Syracuse was solid against Colgate, but the Cardinals have speed and should be able to handle the Orange.

Associated Student Body President Austin Powell: I prayed that both teams play better than their opening games, and then I thanked the Lord for Lamar Jackson. Cards take the cake.

South Carolina at Mississippi State
BR: I don’t even really know what to think about this game. South Carolina beat Vandy last week almost by default in a really ugly game, and State lost to South Alabama. Will Muschamp gets the Gamecocks to 2-0 by managing to not “not lose” this one, I guess?

CT: South Carolina did not look good against Vanderbilt at all and it looks like South Carolina’s rebuild could take some time. But they also didn’t lose to the University of South Alabama last week. Gamecocks get the victory.

AP: In this game, I’m choosing South Alabama… I mean South Carolina.

Virginia Tech at No. 17 Tennessee
BR: This game is being played at a Bristol Motor Speedway, that’s kind of cool. As much as I want to pick Virginia Tech here based on Tennessee’s abomination of a performance last week, I think the Vols bounce back and feel better about themselves this week.

CT: Virginia Tech had some trouble taking down Liberty last week. The Volunteers had a lot of trouble beating Appalachian State. I think coach Justin Fuente gets the Hokies together and squeaks out an upset.

AP: The Hokies are going to play hooky, and Tennessee wins. It just might take a long time.

Texas Tech at Arizona State
BR: The fact that this game is on the pick’ em slate shows what kind of week it is in college football. Texas Tech scores a lot of points, and they’ll probably win this one.

CT: I want to pick the Sun Devils here, but their passing defense looked atrocious last week. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Red Raiders should have no trouble picking them apart in route to a victory.

AP: Has anything good ever come from Lubbock, Texas? ASU wins on home turf.

Arkansas at No. 15 TCU

BR: Arkansas barely snuck by Louisiana Tech and TCU got locked up in a shootout with South Dakota State and barely survived it. Two opposing styles clash and I’m going to go with TCU by at least 10 points.

CT: Its an interesting matchup with a power run and a spread offense. I think TCU bounces back from a lackluster performance last week and defeats the Razorbacks.

AP: These are a few of my least favorite teams. Unfortunately, TCU will take the win.

Virginia at No. 24 Oregon

BR: Oregon isn’t what it once was a couple years back, but it is still pretty solid at home. Ducks by two touchdowns.

CT: Who would you rather fight, one cavalier-sized duck or 100 duck-sized cavaliers? Either way, Oregon wins this one easy.

AP: Oregon scored big, while Virginia lost at home to the mighty Spiders of Richmond. This one shouldn’t be close, as Oregon runs away with it in Eugene.
