It was a tough weekend for the Ole Miss soccer team, as they lost both of their games and failed to register a goal in either matchup. The losses drop the Rebels to a 5-4 record on the season.
On Friday, Ole Miss took on their first SEC opponent of the season, the Mizzou Tigers, and ultimately lost 5-0. The Tigers are now 5-2-1 on the season.
“We kind of got smashed in the mouth against Missouri,” Head Coach Matthew Mott said. “They came out flying at us, and we didn’t respond well to drop that match.”
Two days later, Ole Miss took on South Alabama and again faced defeat. Despite losing, Mott was proud of the team’s play against the Jaguars.
“I think we had a good bounce-back last night and played the best game of the season last night against South Alabama, which is, in the soccer world a good team,” Mott said. “They (South Alabama) had beaten No. 1 Florida State earlier in the week and came in with a lot of confidence. We went down 1-0, but we battled back. We played well at times, but couldn’t find the equalizer to maybe get that into overtime. But we played a good match and performed well.”
Ole Miss will play another conference game against LSU Friday in Baton Rouge. The Tigers have a 4-4 record and are coming off a 0-3 loss against No. 11 Texas A&M. Mott said this will be a tough game for the team, just like it has been in the past.
“It is always a good, tight match when we go down there,” Mott said. “It is a tough place to play. They have a talented couple of attacking players and one of the better coaches certainly in the league and in the country (Brian Lee).”
The following Sunday, the Rebels will take on the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. Tulsa has a record of 3-4-1.
“Tulsa is also a very tough team,” Mott said about the Rebels’ last non-conference game of the season.
