Police have identified a suspect in the armed robbery that occurred Thursday night on South Lamar on the Square.

Though the suspect fled the scene, Police Chief Joey East said he has been identified from eyewitness and victim reports. The department is investigating his whereabouts.

East said though there was one identified victim, there is another possible victim that has not yet been verified.

The police department recovered a weapon at the scene but no shots were fired, East said. Details on the weapon and the name of the suspect have not been released.

Both the victim and the suspect were in the car when the crime occurred, East said, and the victim exited the vehicle near Proud Larry’s.

“This wasn’t something that happened on the Square,” East said. “It came to the Square from somewhere else.”

East said, although Oxford is not particularly dangerous, those who are leaving the downtown area should “be vigilant” and travel in groups.
