Welcome back, it’s time for another weekly Wednesday playlist, and this time we’re bringing back our Mississippi hits for part two.

As much as our state makes me mad (re: HB 1523), there are some things I can’t help but love about our big, beautiful cesspool of a state— and music is definitely one of them.

Our culture is so incredibly diverse, and I personally think our music scene is welcoming to all who wish to participate.  That’s what’s so disappointing to me about the new legislation that was just passed; not only does it cater specifically to a bigoted minority in the state, Mississippi is known universally as “the birthplace of America’s music,” and “the hospitality state.”  So, to experience such a welcoming music community, and then to see our state leaders allow legal discrimination against a large group of our population is despicable.

However, to distract you from this incredibly silly new law (thanks, Phil Bryant), I’ve put together this playlist of some really cool Mississippi bands.  I’ll say it again like I did in my previous Mississippi article: man, have we got some talent.

We’ve got songs from all over the state – Lo Noom, Baghead and Big Bleach from Hattiesburg, as well as May Queen of Grenada. And representing Oxford we have Swear Tapes, NERVS, Pinebox and Bonus, just to name a few.

Some of these guys and gals are newer bands, but are already making strides touring in and out of state.  So, go Mississippi.

All of these bands and those listed in my previous Mississippi playlist really make me proud to be from this state, and they should make you proud too.  In the next few weeks, Oxford and our state in general will be teeming with opportunities to support our local music.  This Saturday is National Record Store Day, and I know for a fact you can find a lot of this local music at The End of All Music. Double Decker is next weekend and the lineup should be great. Shows at Proud Larry’s, The Blind Pig, Big Sleepy’s, Hey Joe’s, The Porn Hall and Spice World happen all the time, so what’s your excuse?

Let’s keep that welcoming Mississippi hospitality alive in our music.
