The Ole Miss football team practiced outdoors Tuesday as they continue to prep for this season’s first home game against Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday.
Despite last weekend’s 41-3 win against Vanderbilt, head coach Hugh Freeze expressed to the media that there is still a lot of room for improvement and that he wasn’t impressed with Tuesday’s practice.
“We have got to be more efficient in our practice; our coaches have got to do a better job of explaining expectations and certain things,” Freeze said. “We have tried to do some stuff together today because we think we can give them a very similar look to what our opponent does. I just think we didn’t have the effort today that I expected us to have and we’ve got to bounce back tomorrow and get after it for sure.”
Freeze continued to address the team’s expectations as a program.
“There has got to be some leadership there that says this is the way we practice if we want to go from good to great and take the next step we certainly cant afford to go out and waste days and there were some periods today that were wasted,” Freeze said. “It wasn’t the entire practice but there were some and that’s a bit frustrating.“
Regarding the Louisiana-Lafayette defense, Freeze said it is very similar to previous opponent Boise State.
“It’s a good scheme, but it’s very similar to what we have seen,” Freeze said.
Senior cornerback Cliff Coleman was named Southeastern Conference defensive player of the week Monday and also took to the podium to talk about this weekend’s game.
“I was surprised I didn’t expect SEC player of the week, but it’s a great feeling,” Coleman said about the honor of being named SEC defensive player of the week.
When asked about Louisiana-Lafayette’s quarterback Terrance Broadway, Coleman said he is not worried.
“He is a good quarterback. He can scramble. He can throw, but I still don’t think it will be a hassle for us, not that we are going to put anything past them,” Coleman said. “We are still going to go out and compete just like it’s any other team, just another team we are trying to beat, knock ‘em off the map.”
