The Southeastern Conference is currently – or will soon be – reviewing fans going onto the field after Ole Miss’ 41-24 win against Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, according to SEC associate director of media relations Chuck Dunlap. There is no timetable for when the league offices will make a decision.
The SEC rule regarding fans entering the field of play, which went into effect 2004 reads, “Access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”
Dunlap said the policy can impose financial penalties on institutions for violations in football and men’s and women’s basketball. First-time violators of the rule are subject to a fine of $5,000, $25,000 for second violations and $50,000 for third and subsequent violations.
However, the size of the penalty will be “at the discretion of the commissioner,” according to Dunlap.
