Ole Miss announced Thursday morning that redshirt-junior running back Jordan Wilkins will miss the 2016 season after being ruled academically ineligible.
The school said that Wilkins will miss the year “after not meeting NCAA standards for progress towards a degree.”
Ole Miss cited an administrative error as why Wilkins was ruled ineligible and filed an appeal to have him reinstated, but it was denied.
“The athletics department takes full responsibility and holds itself accountable when situations like this occur with our student-athletes. We will support Jordan to the fullest during this time and look forward to seeing him return to the field,” Ole Miss said in a statement.
Wilkins had 72 carries for 379 yards a year ago and was battling with Akeem Judd for the starting running back position this fall. He will be eligible to play in 2017, and because he has already used a redshirt it would be his final year of eligibility.
Chuck Rounsaville of the Ole Miss Spirit first reported the news last night, and the school officially announced it this morning.
