More than 100 members of the community came to the Grove on Monday evening to remember the six passengers killed in a plane crash.
On Sunday, the plane carrying Oxford dentists Dr. Jason and Dr. Lea Farese, Dr. Austin and Angie Poole, and Dr. Michael and Kim Perry crashed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, killing all of its passengers.
Pastor Joe Tonos of Catholic Campus Ministry told the crowd that people mourn in different ways.
“Some of us have different gifts. Some of you are called to be strong, others are called to cry, others are called to laugh, to pray and its all needed. This family is needed, friends, class mates, they need it. There is nothing you can not give.”
Tonos also offered the community guidance about being there for the families of the victims.
“When you see a family member of the Farese family, the Poole family, and the Perry family, don’t say, ‘Is there something I can do for you? Let me know.’ For if you have ever been needed, you don’t want someone to know you are needed,” Tonos said. “Rather, it would be better to say, I’m going to call you, I’m going to send a text, I’m going to come by.”
The crowd was invited to participate in group prayer. People gathered in circles to pray and have a moment of silence.
The ceremony ended with a guitarist playing and singing Amazing Graze.
