Weekly playlist: Mississippi musicians

Welcome back to another edition of Alice’s Super Sweet Playlists (not the real name, but it has a nice ring to it). This week is a playlist that hits a little bit closer to home because it’s full of Mississippi’s very finest musicians. Before I continue, I will go ahead and say that this playlist does not accurately portray the state completely; a lot of our great musicians cannot be represented because their music is not on Spotify, but rather on Bandcamp. Next week I’ll be back with a second installment showcasing their works.

You may remember my Mississippi playlist from years past, but I just can’t help but share it again — I love our Mississippi music more than any other, and new musicians get added every year. We’ve got folksy tunes from bands like Water Liars, garage punk from Oxford’s own The Cooters, whimsical indie from Ole Miss student Andrew Newman’s project Lo Noom, and much, much more. Some of these bands and artists are still playing in the state, some have broken up and some have moved on to bigger cities, but their music is unforgettable and will live on.

If you think about it, we really are blessed to have such a great culture that fosters the musical spirit. Take a listen to this playlist, get to know these bands and come out and support them at their shows. Until next week!
